The UT Student Volunteer Board Welcomes UT Students!

The UT Student Volunteer Board (SVB) is a group of professional student leaders that coordinates, promotes, and facilitates community service opportunities and events for the entire UT community. With over 8,000 UT student volunteers participating in our 8 programs, the SVB strives to help area agencies meet the needs of their communities.

From helping the homeless to mentoring elementary school children, the SVB programs promote civic responsibility and leadership within the UT student body. The SVB board members invest their time into connecting with local leaders and assessing volunteer needs in the Austin area.  As a result of their leadership role, SVB members gain program planning skills, organizational management skills, social justice training, and increased awareness of social issues prevalent in the Austin area.

SVB Service Project Spotlight: UT Plays

Congratulations to UT plays for being selected as this week’s SVB Project spotlight! They have been doing a great job and volunteering at various service organizations including the: Arc of capital area with children.

UT PLAYS: UT Providing Light to Austin’s Youth through Students (UT PLAYS) is an organization dedicated to serving children and families of the Austin community, particularly those who are underprivileged, abused, neglected, and developmentally disabled.

This is a great opportunity to positively influence kids in the Austin community!

Everyone is welcome! No experience necessary.

To learn more about UT Plays visit their FB page at: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=113853358673176&ref=ts

For the 2010-2011 schoolyear, we have partnered with:

* Arc of the Capital Area (http://www.arcofthecapitalarea.org/)
- Respites (childcare) second Tuesday of the month
- Coop (childcare) second Saturday of the month

* Theatre Action Project (http://www.theatreactionproject.org/)

* VSA Texas (http://www.vsatx.org/)
- One-time service at semester events

* Blackland (http://www.main.org/blacklandcdc/)
- “Blackland CDC is interesting in partnering with some UT students; our biggest need at this moment is for a couple of students once a week to help with child care (and activities for kids) while their parents are in parenting and financial literacy classes in the next room. This is for our transitional housing program for homeless and near-homeless families. Typically, we need 2-3 students from about 5:45 to 7:30 on Tuesday evenings”

We also work with various other non-profit organizations in the Austin area as needed. These may include:
* Communities in Schools (http://www.cisaustin.org/)
* Heart House (http://www.hearthouse.org/)

Please feel free to suggest any other organizations you feel would benefit from our service!

UTSVB Service Project Spotlight: H2O

Congratulations to H2O for doing a great job in working together as a team to server others. H2O has been volunteering at various organizations, and at various service projects. This past week they had the opportunity to volunteer at : HOPE FEST 2010 and the following was their experience.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, Hunger and Homelessness Outreach (H2O) volunteered for HopeFest ’10, a celebration of two months of community service at Reagan High School. H2O volunteers flyered the surrounding neighborhoods to get residents to attend the on-going HopeFest and then did miscellaneous duties at the fair. Listen to what HopeFest/Festival de Esperanza was like for H2O:

“I had such an amazing time not only meeting new and passionate people, but talking with the children and families and learning more about the community organizations as well. HopeFest provided such an amazing opportunity for families and children to enjoy themselves and learn more about different sources to help the people near Reagan High School. I look forward to working with the HopeFest organizations and becoming more active in the St. Johns Community. Together as ONE we can make a difference!” ~Paulina Sosa

Volunteering at HopeFest this past Saturday was awesome! I enjoyed going out to the surrounding residential areas to spread the word about a festival going on that day that would provide free health and dental screenings, insurance workshops, an education fair, children’s clothes and books, games and more. It was especially rewarding when I began seeing those same faces at HopeFest later that afternoon. Also, the live music brought together by some local churches was amazing. All in all, it was great participating and learning first hand about all the wonderful opportunities HopeFest was providing for the Reagan High area.” ~Cally Hibbs

“HopeFest was a fantastic event. It was nice having some free time to explore the festival as well as volunteer. I’m sure the community appreciated HopeFest’s free immunizations, health screenings, children’s clothing and books, resources and services. There were also a lot of fun things for kids to do; I wanted to join in on quite a few of them. My favorite part of the event was when the H2O volunteers hopped the fence together to get off of and later back onto the school property. Both the seasoned volunteers and the first-time volunteers worked together and encouraged one another to ensure that everyone made it over the fence safely. It was a wonderful and unexpected way to unite our volunteers and to build trust and friendship within the H2O team.” ~Olivia Beck

HopeFest is a resource fair where lots of churches, non-profit organizations, government organizations, etc. come together to provide medical care and screening, insurance screening, needed materials and other important opportunities to families in the area of Reagan high school (or elsewhere in Austin). HopeFest also has lots of fun activities for children and teenagers and a music festival.

H2O is a Student Volunteer Board (SVB) community service program that raises awareness and finds volunteers willing to serve area agencies that help those in need of food and shelter. Email h2outreach@gmail.com for information about meetings and service events and how to join. Hook ‘em!

Again congratulations to H2O for doing a great job!! please email them if you would like to volunteer with them.
